2011 Summer School

5 – 10 September 2011 at the Brighton & Sussex Medical School, University of Sussex, Brighton, UK.
FDIME awarded two Educational Grants to Residents from Tunisia:-

Dr Mohamed Marwene Grira came from Mongi Slim Teaching Hospital, Tunis.
Dr Grira is currently undertaking a Residency in Geriatrics at Hôpital des Trois-Chênes in Geneva. He told us..

"Some experiences in life create a memory which is indelible and lasts forever. ESIM is definitely one of those experiences. Primarily, attending ESIM gave the opportunity to enjoy a quality scientific program through lectures, workshops and clinical case presentations in a very relaxed atmosphere. I found the comparison of the practice of internal medicine from one country to another and of the experiences of the different residents particularly interesting, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the health system in which I work where changes could be made to improve our daily medical practice.
ESIM 2011 was also the opportunity to spend a week with 55 other medical residents from 26 different countries. And more than simple professional relationships, real friendships have emerged at the end of this exceptional week, despite the short time we spent together. Our paths will surely cross again, especially through the various events organized by the European Federation of Internal Medicine (EFIM)."

Dr Fatma Derbali, Resident in Internal Medicine at the Regional Hospital of Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia told us:-

"The ESIM educational programme was interesting because of the diversity of subjects that were included (for example infectious diseases, gastroenterology, pneumology).
This diversity is useful for internal medicine residents especially in Tunisia because of our educational system. In Tunisia, internal medicine is an independent specialty like cardiology, pneumology so we do not find many types of disease in our departments. In the clinical cases and CPC sessions, we discussed pathologies from other specialties.
I will use what I have learnt in preparing my lectures and in resolving diagnosis problems of my patients."

2011 Winter School

The first ESIM Winter School was held in Saas Fee, Switzerland from 16 – 21 January 2011. The Foundation awarded an educational grant to one Resident from Morocco.

Dr Laila Benjilali came from the Internal Medicine Dept at Mohamed VI University Hospital Center in Marrakech, Morocco. She told us:

‘Attending the European School was a good opportunity for me to meet and interact with European Young Internists, to see other facets of internal medicine and to build new professional relationships. There was an exciting scientific program with lectures, workshops and clinical case presentations under the supervision of illustrious European professors. ESIM was a good lifetime experience of active learning in a pleasant atmosphere.’
